Lucerne Valley Unified School District teachers, classified school employees, administrators and parents held a “Stand Up for Public Schools” awareness day on March 4 to show their concern over school funding cuts. They joined educators statewide in recognizing Educators’ Day of Action, part of a campaign to “Stop the Cuts.”
Last year, LVUSD struggled to deal with the $1.2 million in budget cuts. Statewide, over $17 billion has been cut.
To promote awareness, teachers, classified employees, School Board members, administrators and some parents were given royal blue shirts to wear March 4. The shirts proclaim “S.O.S., Save Our Students.” (Though the initials are the same, there is no official connections with the Save Our Schools committee.)
Lucerne Valley Elementary School staff and supporters will be wearing these shirts again Thursday as they present “Math and Science Night” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Goulding Hall will host individual science project displays. Top projects advance to the 28th annual Inland Science and Engineering Fair at the National Orange Show Fairgrounds April 13-14. Last year, Destynie Urrutia and Gabryelle Chamberlin represented Lucerne Valley Elementary with their projects. Class projects and other work will be on display in some classrooms.
In conjunction with Science Night, LVES will also have a table set up for voter registration. The Lions Club has offered to take care of the potential voters and there will be an information table regarding the ballot measure supporting the schools.
