LUCERNE VALLEY • The Lucerne Valley High School volleyball team prevailed in its Homecoming match last Thursday, sweeping Academy of Careers and Exploration of Helendale, 3-0.

Kori Lemoine and Tori Bartholomew had four kills each while Lemoine also scored four service aces. Brianna Johnson and Karen Angeles had two kills each for the Mustangs, who picked up their second victory of the season.

“It was a good win for us tonight,” stated second year coach Steve Colangelo in an e-mail to The Leader. “This was only our second game with the brand new line-up, so there’s bound to be a bit of adjustment as the team tries to find its chemistry. The team really came together tonight and I am extremely proud of them.”

HOMECOMING WINNERS: The 2011 Lucerne Valley High School Homecoming Court was announced at halftime of Friday night’s football game. The senior Queen and King were Desiree Walker and Daniel Jauregui.

Other winners included junior Princess and Prince Mayra Mondragon and Adam Garcia; sophomore Duchess and Duke Hayley Aston and Chris Campos; and freshman Lady and Lord Jessica Smith and Daniel Quintana.

RAISING SPIRITS: The Associated Student Body held school spirit events throughout the week, including a spirit rally at the stadium Friday afternoon. The rally featured floats for each grade level, classic cars, horses and other attractions.

“I would like to thank all students, staff, parents and the community who contributed long hours, supplies, horses and classic cars/flatbeds to make Spirit Week and Homecoming fun and successful events,” ASB Adviser Kimberly Szczatko stated in an email to The Leader.

NOTES: A sudden thunderstorm pounded the field toward the end of the spirit rally Friday afternoon. The track surrounding the field was slightly muddy, but the field appeared to be in good condition before kickoff. No rain fell during the game, but there were a few lightning strikes in the distance and a cool breeze picked up in the second half. … The pregame festivities featured two horses on the field, including one with a rider carrying an American flag. … Kickoff was scheduled for 6 p.m. so players and other students could attend the Homecoming dance following the game. However, the kickoff was pushed back to nearly 6:30 p.m. because the game officials arrived late. There may have been some confusion about the start time; Internet sources such as CalPreps.com listed the kickoff at 7 p.m.
