LUCERNE VALLEY • The Lucerne Valley High School boys basketball team is looking to build on a fast start, while the girls team hopes to rebound from a slow one.

After a holiday break, both teams start the second half of their seasons this week.

Fourth-year boys head coach Prestonn Biggs said his young team will soon see stiffer competition than it faced early on.

“When we get into the next part of schedule the teams are going to be a lot more evenly matched with us,” Biggs said.

The Mustangs (5-4) have used their speed to find success so far, turning steals into fastbreak points. Biggs said senior Alondre Logan and younger brother Lonye Logan (a sophomore) are his speediest players, and sophomore point guard Daniel Stratton has stepped into a leadership role.

The Mustangs boys team will face Victor Valley Christian on Friday at 5 p.m. at Victor Valley Christian.

Warren Allen is in his first season as head coach of the LVHS girls team. The Lady Mustangs are currently 3-9, but Allen says reaching the playoffs is still a realistic goal if the team continues to improve.

“We’ve lost some games that quite frankly we should have won, but the girls are still on a learning curve,” Allen said.

Led by team captains Courtney Kelly, Rita Correa and Karen Angeles, the Lady Mustangs started the second half with a home game against Big Bear on Tuesday (a day after The Leader went to press) and play their next home game on Jan. 13 against Academy for Academic Excellence.
