BIG BEAR CITY • The Lucerne Valley High School wrestling team went on the road and defeated Big Bear High School 39-36 in a team dual meet last Thursday.
Next up for the Mustangs is a home dual against Bishop Union High School on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the gymnasium at LVHS.
After a long trip up the winding mountain road last week, the young Mustangs went first against the few Big Bear junior varsity wrestlers. Junior John Sullivan started the Mustangs off, earning a quick 20-second pin in his exhibition match.
Once the limited number of JV matches were out of the way, the varsity wrestling commenced.
Senior Matt Beans had a bit of a rough start, but turned it around at the end of the second round to win his match. Junior Emmanuel Dimas and senior Isaac Aguilar earned quick pins against their opponents, and senior Jeremy Riley earned a hard fought decision.
The match could have gone either way, but forfeits received by Alberto Barbosa, Robbie Hess, and John Sullivan gave the advantage to the Mustangs.
This year’s team consists of five seniors, seven juniors, three sophomores and three freshman. Of those 18 students, half are first-time wrestlers.
Next up for the first-year and JV members is a JV tournament in Yucca Valley on Saturday.
